The General Charter of Local Union #170 was Issued in October of 1933 to the City of Worcester, "Heart of the Commonwealth." The Local Union was set up to take care of the Central Massachusetts Territory. It's purpose was to organize the un-organized in order to form a better relationship between management and employee.
The Transportation Division of the Local was the first division to be formed, and the first contract for the division was negotiated and signed by the employers in 1935. In the following years, other divisions were formed and area contracts signed, covering employees working in a wide range of occupations, such as the following:
grocery, beer and liquor, sand and gravel, concrete, construction, bread and bakery, automotive, car-haulers, mechanics, small package, and most recent: teacher aids, police officers, police dispatchers, clerical employees, highway employees, school bus drivers, etc.
During the months of October, November, and December of 1933, the Local signed 150 members from this small handful of hardy and honest working people. Local #170 has grown through the years and now comprises a membership of over 5,200.
As a result of these years of steady growth, in the year 1951, Local #170 purchased and moved its headquarters to 8 Winter Street. In the year 1966, a section of land was purchased at 805 Millbury Street, and the construction of the new headquarters followed.
The aim of the Local Union has been to establish better hours, wages, and working conditions for its membership and through the years it has also added health and welfare coverage, pension plan, credit union, blood bank, scholarship awards, retiree's chapter club, strike force committee, volunteer organizers' committee, and C.D.L training. All of this has been accomplished between employers on a basis of equal and fair competition.
